This is not a complete list of all area doctors that work with autism.  If you know of a doctor that we have missed, please let us know and we will be happy to add them.  Inclusion on this list does not imply a referral or recommendation.  This is simply a print out from the area hospitals for specialists that can treat autism as a part of their practice.

PICTURE COMMUNICATION BOOK HELPS CHILDREN WITH AUTISM UNDERSTAND EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS

Rockford - Communicating with an autistic child who is injured or ill can be difficult in an emergency situation. Thanks to a new Picture Communication Book developed by the Special Education Department at Rockford Public Schools, emergency room personnel area hospitals will have a tool to make the child’s experience a little less frightening.

The Picture Communication Book uses line drawings and symbols to represent objects – needles, medications, X-rays – and people such as doctors and nurses. It is used to explain what is happening to the child during his visit to the emergency room.

The book was created with the help of Autism Awareness of Northern Illinois, a non-profit organization formed by Diane Boone, M.D., a Rockford Health Physicians ophthalmologist and her husband, Kendall Boone, M.D., a vascular surgeon with Affiliated Surgeons of Rockford. The couple has a five-year-old son with PDD-NOS, a form of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is a complex developmental disability. It is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of communication and social interaction skills. Autism is a spectrum disorder and it affects each individual differently and at varying degrees. The Centers for Disease Control estimates one in 166 children have an autism spectrum disorder. April is National Autism Awareness Month.
